WHY MOVIE FANS SHOULD ABSOLUTELY CARE ABOUT THE BOX OFFICE

Those of you who have watched the show for any length of time know that I often love to look at the box office when talking about a movie. When I do, I inevitably get hit with comments like:

WHY DO YOU CARE? IT’S NOT YOUR MONEY

or

BOX OFFICE DOESN’T MEAN A MOVIE IS GOOD

…and other similar statements. And while it is true that a) it’s not my money, and b) big box office doesn’t MEAN a movie is good, I think people are missing the point. I know I’ve discussed this a few times on my show, but never as its own topic so I thought I’d codify my thoughts on the topic here:

If you’re a movie fan, you should very much care about box office. Because within the box office numbers is a world of information, both direct and indirect for us. Information that will help us understand the movie industry better, understand our fellow fans better, and understand why some movies get made and others don’t. Here are just some examples of things we lear from box office numbers:

  1. How effective was a marketing campaign? We love talking about movie trailers and teasers and features. But did a movie’s marketing campaign, its trailers, do a good job of selling movie fans on the film? Box office numbers (particularly the opening weekend numbers) give us a lot of insight into that.

  2. What sorts of movies are getting movie fans out to the theaters? The 2021 film NOMADLAND is absolutely brilliant and won the Academy Award for Best Picture… only made $39 million at the box office. Think about that. So while the movie is INSANELY good it was clearly not the kind of movie that a lot of average moviegoers were going to run out to.

  3. What kinds of films will studio likely make/not make? When we see patterns in the box office it will give us indicators about what studio are likely to do when it comes to how they respond to those patterns.

Look, I could like about 5 more things, but I think you get the idea. Box Office numbers are not just pieces of information telling us how rich some studios are going to get. It’s vital information to anyone who is a serious movie fan about how WE are reacting to films, trailers, trends… about how the STUDIOS are responding and deciding what kind of content to offer… and about the INDSUTRY’s over all general condition. So yeah, I think any serious conversation about movies should often (not always) include addressing the box office. ~John

OTHER BIG STORIES YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

1) John Boyega Backs Acolyte Star Amandla Stenberg After Racist Response To The Show's Cancelation

  • Following the cancellation of the Star Wars series The Acolyte and the racist backlash directed at star Amandla Stenberg, actor John Boyega has publicly shown his support for Stenberg.

  • This is not a new phenomenon in the Star Wars franchise, as actors such as Ahmed Best, Jake Lloyd, Daisy Ridley, and Moses Ingram have also been subjected to similar harassment.

  • This negative trend not only harms the actors and creators but also damages the franchise's future, potentially leading to cancellations and hindering its potential for success.
