JOHN’S THOUGHTS
It’s straight-up sad how openly racist people are in our online movie communities now. My reaction for The Little Mermaid wasn’t up for more than 10 minutes when all the predictable comments started coming in. “I’m tired of dark-skinned movies. Wake me up when while people are allowed in movies again”. “This movie obviously sucked he’s just saying that so blacks won’t get mad”. “This movie is just a giant agenda tool”. And obviously the old favorite: “Woke!”. on and on and on and on.
Don’t get me wrong, Little Mermaid is a movie, thus it’s subjective which means some people will like it and some people won’t. But when it’s so obviously explicit that people are bashing it BECAUSE A GIRL IN IT HAS SKIN THAT IS A BIT DARKER THAN THEIRS, it makes me lose more hope in humanity.
These people are so hell-bent on keeping their 100-year-old agenda of exclusion that they are more than willing to make themselves look like idiots trying to give commentary on how good or bad a movie is before they’re even seen it, because a MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE THAT DOES NOT ACTUALLY EXIST has darker skin. Pathetic.
Again, and to be clear, there are going to be people who see this movie and don’t like it just because it legitimately doesn’t work for them. No problem. That’s completely fair. But let’s be honest, you can tell when it’s one of those… and one of the others. Becasue the “others” make it so obvious. They don’t even really try to hide it.
